Results in Cuba

Contraceptive prevalence is high in Cuba, and sexuality education has expanded. But unwanted pregnancies and high abortion rates indicate gaps, particularly among young people. UNFPA cooperation began in 1971 and today helps to incorporate population dynamics into development programmes. It assists in extending reproductive and health care services to adolescents and young adults, while strengthening related national education initiatives. Partnerships with the government and civil society aim to prevent and address gender-based violence.

Result achieved in 2024

1

Policies were operationalized to address population dynamics and the system of care along with the Programme Against Racism, Programme for Women’s Advancement, Code of Families, and Strategy to Prevent Gender-Based Violence

2

The Ministry of Public Health monitored and implemented a plan for the prevention of adolescent pregnancy across 25 municipalities in the eastern region, integrating prevention strategies into their development plans

3

Quality standards in comprehensive adolescent health services were expanded to 14 new municipalities in the Eastern region, bringing the total to 34 municipalities prioritized due to higher adolescent fertility rates

4

Implementation of the Code of Families was strengthened by providing targeted training in the legal sector, advancing a progressive family code that recognizes diverse family structures and promotes gender equality

5

Population dynamics were integrated into development plans by 20 subnational governments, with specific support provided to Cienfuegos, Habana Vieja, Jaruco, San José and Viñales

6

254,800 persons, predominantly adolescents, were provided with a choice of contraceptive methods
