Geneva is the United Nations hub for human rights, public health issues and humanitarian affairs, offering a unique opportunity to advance the global normative and policy agenda in relation to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action and of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Serving as the Representative of UNFPA in Geneva, the Chief of the Office represents HQ and Senior Management in Geneva-based processes; promotes UNFPA’s mandate; enhances the visibility of UNFPA’s work and programmes;  and oversees the inter-governmental advocacy work in Geneva to protect and advance th ICPD agenda.

Geneva Office maintains relations with all Permanent Missions to the United Nations in Geneva, international organisations based in Geneva, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, international NGOs, and academic and research institutions to advance UNFPA’s mandate and strategy. The Office has traditionally engaged with inter-governmental bodies including the Human Rights Council and the World Health Assembly. Moreover, it works closely with human rights mechanisms, including the Universal Periodic Review, United Nations Treaty Bodies and Special procedures of the Human Rights Council.

Geneva Office also maintains bilateral relations with the Swiss Confederation.

Pernille Fenger

Director of the UNFPA Representation Office in Geneva from August 1, 2023, and Director of the UNFPA’s Nordic Representation Office in Copenhagen from 2009 to 2023.

The past 33 years, Pernille Fenger has worked in the field of development focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and climate and environmental issues. Through her advocacy, programme management and communications work, she has contributed to shape global policy on health and gender; has consolidated partnership in support of UNFPA's mandate; and has promoted human rights-based solutions to development challenges in various fields.

Pernille Fenger holds a Master’s degree in History from the University of Copenhagen and has a French language diploma from the Sorbonne. Pernille has two children.
