Results in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has made solid progress in improving the status, health and education of women following years of internal conflict and the lasting effects of the 2004 tsunami. It has seen dramatic reductions in maternal mortality, providing a model for other countries. Since 1969, UNFPA has partnered with Sri Lanka to improve access and availability of quality reproductive health services and information for women, men and young people.

Result achieved in 2024

Over 516,000 individuals across 12 districts and Export Processing Zones accessed sexual and reproductive health services

A comprehensive sexuality education guideline aligned with international standards was developed and submitted to the Ministry of Education for validation

Multi-sectoral National Action Plan to Address Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Sri Lanka (2024–2028) and the Women Empowerment Act (No. 37 of 2024), which was approved by Parliament

13 shelters were equipped for sexual and gender-based violence survivors, Emergency Waiting Areas were installed in seven districts, and Mithuru Piyasa (Friendly Abode) clinics were upgraded

Sri Lanka Police developed a circular for establishing Emergency Waiting Areas providing safe spaces for survivors of gender-based violence

A Gender-Based Violence Safety Audit was developed to assess how to integrate prevention and response at evacuation centres during disasters
