About us

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, working to uphold the rights and choices of women, girls and young people across more than 150 countries. Through our work, we ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person can fulfil their potential.

How we work

Guided by the 1994 Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), UNFPA works in partnership with governments, civil society, academia and the private sector to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights.

We share data and analysis to help countries measure progress. We bring in resources and technical expertise where they are most needed. We advocate for rights and choices in government discussions and public debates. We also build national capacity through training and monitoring, and we join regional and international meetings to strengthen knowledge and commitment.

UNFPA also manages pooled funding mechanisms — including Joint Programmes and Multi-Donor Trust Funds — at global, regional and country levels, ensuring resources are channelled where they are needed most.

UNFPA is funded voluntarily by governments and other partners to provide sexual and reproductive health services around the world. There are two types of resources: core and non-core. Core resources are unrestricted contributions that enable us to direct support to where it’s most needed. Non-core resources are directed by donors to specific purposes and locations.
