The UNFPA Tokyo Representation Office (TRO) was established in October 2002, strategically located in Tokyo, Japan, to fortify UNFPA's presence and engagement within the country. As part of the Division of Communications and Strategic Partnerships (DCS), TRO maintains close collaboration with key stakeholders in Japan, which includes crucial partnerships with government bodies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, parliamentarians, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, academia, media, and citizens. TRO's primary work is to elevate awareness about UNFPA's mandate and objectives and advocate for consistent and increased funding to support UNFPA's activities worldwide. The office consists of the Chief, an Administrative Assistant, seasonal interns, and periodical consultants.

Prior to her current role as the Chief of the UNFPA Tokyo Representation Office, Ms. Eiko Narita served as the interim Representative (2021-2022) and the Deputy Representative of UNFPA in Bangladesh (2018-2021), as well as the Programme Specialist in UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Office (2014-2018). She also worked as the Deputy Representative of UNFPA Yemen (2012-2014), where she chaired the UN Gender Working Group and Gender Based Violence sub-cluster gender the Inter-agency Standing Committee in Emergency Setting and was actively involved in supporting Yemen’s transitional process, advocating for key gender issues related to UNFPA mandate.

 

Eiko holds a Ph.D from Chiba University in Japan on Governance, Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Harvard University and Bachelor’s degree in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University.
