As drought and floods threaten millions in Ethiopia, midwives are a lifeline for pregnant women and newborns

In Ethiopia's Somali region, a camp in the village of Gabi’as shelters hundreds of households displaced by drought. Over 260,000 women are currently pregnant in the Somali region alone, many of them internally displaced from recurrent, multiple crises and at dire risk of acute undernourishment, without access to even the most basic health care. © UNFPA Ethiopia/Paula Seijo

UNFPA Sudan Emergency Situation Report #4 - 05 July 2023

Resource date: Jul 2023

Author: UNFPA Sudan

Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has continued for over two months, with ongoing violence in Khartoum, Kordofan, Darfur and Blue Nile. Since April, more than 2.8 million people have been forced into displacement, including 2.2 million internally-displaced.

UNFPA, as all humanitarian actors, is facing operational challenges as it scales up the response. Some 67 percent of hospitals, in areas affected by fighting, are closed and several maternity hospitals are out of action, including Omdurman Hospital, the largest referral hospital in Sudan.
