In January 2026, the humanitarian situation in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) States remained critical. Humanitarian partners and the Government of Nigeria launched an urgent appeal for US$516 million to provide life-saving support to 2.5 million of the most vulnerable people, with women and adolescent girls accounting for 80% of those in immediate need. As part of this appeal, UNFPA requires $22.1 million to deliver essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services.
Violence by non-state armed groups has displaced hundreds of thousands in the North-East. Displacement sites are frequently targeted, undermining protection efforts, increasing vulnerability, and triggering repeated displacement. The Borno State Government facilitated the voluntary repatriation of over 3,000 refugees from Cameroon, with UNFPA supporting the process by providing dignity kits and case management for women and girls to ensure immediate support, protection, and safer reintegration pathways.
In January 2026, UNFPA reached 10,500 people with SRH services, 7,220 people with GBV prevention and response activities, and supported 6,500 young people in peacekeeping, environmental, and vocational programmes at UNFPA-supported facilities.
