Democratic Republic of Congo Situation Report - January 2025

Resource date: Jan 2025

EN

Fighting between Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) in North and South Kivu has intensified since December 2024, causing massive displacement and a humanitarian crisis. Recent fighting near Goma has displaced 400,000 people in three weeks, adding to the over four million already displaced.

Key humanitarian supply corridors have been blocked by fighting, leading to scarcity of essential supplies for operations by humanitarian actors. Access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and protection services, especially for internally displaced persons, has been severely constrained by the rising insecurity.

UNFPA is working to ensure continuity of essential SRH and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response services in the internally displaced people’s camps through eight mobile clinics, supporting five safe spaces and three static health facilities and around eight displacement camps, and operating a GBV hotline. However, the fluidity of the situation requires rapid adaptation to address disruptions and respond to the needs of newly displaced persons.
