The conflict between FARDC and M23, which escalated at the beginning of the year, has led to millions of people displaced in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and violent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure. In the first half of 2025, there have been 33 recorded attacks on health facilities and healthcare workers – a 276 per cent increase from the previous 6 months.

The signing of a peace agreement on June 27 has raised hopes for an end to the conflict. However, widespread insecurity continues to hinder humanitarian access to some areas of eastern DRC that are in critical need of humanitarian support.

Health facilities in North Kivu continue to face shortages of post-rape kits, including post-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of HIV, due to the looting of health facilities, US defunding, and increased rates of conflict-related sexual violence.

During June, a total of 111,994 people benefited from sexual and reproductive health services provided by UNFPA and implementing partners, of which 66 per cent received medical services and 33 per cent participated in information and education sessions. In addition, 15,067 people were reached with gender-based violence prevention, mitigation and response activities.

By mid-year, only 25 per cent of the US$42.3 million UNFPA needs for the humanitarian response in DRC in 2025 has been secured. Additional funding is urgently required to continue to deliver lifesaving health and protection services for women, girls and young people.
