UNFPA Statement on Declaration of Level 2 Emergency in the Middle East

calendar_today17 March 2026

As attacks across the Middle East continue, causing death and destruction and forcing millions  from their homes, hundreds of thousands of women and girls are cut off from lifesaving healthcare and protection services. In light of this UNFPA has activated a Level 2 emergency response covering Iraq, Lebanon and Syria to address rapidly growing needs across the region.

Under a Level 2 emergency response, UNFPA is rapidly scaling up its operational capacity;  pre-positioning essential supplies; and mobilizing resources to address critical response and supply gaps.

UNFPA has released US$900,000 from its flexible Emergency Fund to kickstart its response in the region, and is appealing for US $12 million to support scale-up in Lebanon from March to May 2026, as part of the inter-agency Lebanon Flash Appeal.

UNFPA is committed to ensuring that the safety, health and dignity of women and girls are upheld in every crisis.
