Internship offering is limited to candidates applying from within the duty station of the hiring unit.  

The Position:

Under the direct supervision of the Demographic Analysis and Planning Analyst, UNFPA Country Office the intern will support the country office in the areas of Social, Cultural, and Religious Norms Analysis; and social and political scanning in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)

A work-plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Periodic progress meetings will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern enhancing her/his skills and capacity in areas related to UNFPA’s mandate.

UNFPA is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustained results. We need interns who are exceptional in how they manage the resources entrusted to them and who commit to deliver excellence in programme results. 

You would be responsible for:

  • Support the Country Office (CO) in conducting social, economic, and political situational analyses within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to inform strategic planning, including understanding current capacities related to Shariah laws, human rights, development, and population issues, particularly concerning SRHR.
  • Assist the CO in integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) principles within the Islamic context into its program of support for the BARMM government.
  • Help establish South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) partnerships, particularly with Egypt, in collaboration with the CO and BARMM Sub-office. This includes:
    • Supporting efforts to enhance the capacity of Muslim religious leaders and scholars in BARMM on Shariah laws, human rights, development, and population issues, particularly concerning SRHR, through technical assistance from Egypt.
    • Facilitating knowledge exchange and capacity building for BARMM government bodies, including the Bangsamoro Darul Ifta’, on developing and applying religious edicts (fatwas) that support public health and SRHR, drawing lessons from Egypt's experience.
    • Assisting in the adaptation and implementation of successful Egyptian models and best practices for addressing the root causes of child marriage and improving SRHR service delivery at local levels in BARMM.
    • Contributing to the establishment and operationalization of a formal framework for cooperation between the Governments of Egypt, the Philippines, and BARMM on development initiatives, with a focus on SRHR.
  • Participate in meetings with BARMM ministries, religious leaders, and community groups, providing support and learning about SRHR in the Islamic context.
  • Contribute to the development of policy briefs on topics such as SRHR in the Islamic context and best practices for SRHR in Islamic countries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifying for an Internship

All interns must meet the following educational and other eligibility requirements:

  • Be enrolled in or had recently graduated in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme or higher) in political science, social science, law, and/or any other related field;
  • Some experience in working with development agencies, including in volunteer capacity. 
  • Fluency in English; Fluency in Arabic is an asset;
  • Strong analytical and writing skills; 
  • Good communication and coordination skills; and
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds.

Learning Elements:

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern will gain the following knowledge assets:

  1. Increased understanding of the UNFPA and the Programme Division within UNFPA
  2. Understand the UNFPA mandate and policies, including regional set-up 
  3. Understand and familiarize with UNFPA Governance and Executive Board  
  4. Understand UNFPA programme design and delivery mechanisms
  5. Understand the dynamics of operational and programme support and communications to the field, and at the level of HQ
  6. Learn UN technical language, working procedures, and coordination mechanisms 
  7. Write and formulate substantive documents
  8. Network with UN colleagues 
  9. Work experience as a team member in a multicultural setting

Inputs/services to be provided by UNFPA: 

UNFPA will be providing a laptop during the internship period to be used by the intern for official work purposes and CO events.

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The stipend is based on the intern’s agreed place of work, which may be different from the duty station of the hiring office in cases of remote arrangements. 

In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
