Results in India

Although its fertility rate has declined over the years, India has a population of well over a billion, and wide inequalities persist, despite significant improvements in health and education. Maternal mortality and gender discrimination remain high. Early marriage and pregnancy contribute to excessive maternal death among women under the age of 24. The low status of women, and the skewed sex ratio at birth, remain challenges. UNFPA collaborates with the government, civil society, the private sector, academia, the medical community, the media, judiciary and local communities to address these challenges.

Resource allocations for sexual and reproductive health increased by 20 per cent in four focus states through advocacy with state governments, up from $270 million in 2022 to $324 million in 2024

770 Women and Girls Friendly Gram Panchayats (village councils) were created across all districts, while the Madhya Pradesh government launched the Devi Ahilyabai Nari Shakti Mission, a drive for women’s empowerment

Two new and lesser-used contraceptive methods were rolled out in an additional six states in 2024 to expand method mix and choice

Over 120,000 users accessed accurate, stigma-free information on sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights and mental health through “Just Ask”, an innovative AI-enabled multilingual chatbot

Blockchain technology was piloted in Odisha for One Stop Centre information-sharing while multi-sectoral gender-based violence response coordination was strengthened in collaboration with police in Rajasthan

Strategic dialogues and capacity-building initiatives on National Transfer Accounts (NTA) resulted in a policy focus on optimizing the Silver Dividend – the economic and social potential of an active elderly population
