Results in El Salvador

El Salvador has struggled over the years with ​​widespread violence and insecurity, poverty and climate shocks. High emigration rates, coupled with a slowly decreasing total fertility rate, are contributing to an ageing population. UNFPA has been working in the country since 1973, supporting a range of initiatives, including efforts to improve socioeconomic and gender equality, to prevent sexual violence and care for survivors, to support health centers serving migrant and vulnerable women, to prevent adolescent pregnancy, and to train local health personnel on various aspects of sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence.

Result achieved in 2024

An updated strategy for emergency care for families includes criteria for at-risk populations and incorporates a human right-based approach in obstetric care, and was developed in response to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights measures

The third consecutive humanitarian response plan was completed, ensuring national plans integrate gender-based violence prevention and response as a non-negotiable under a survivor-centred approach, setting a precedent for gender-based violence response decentralization

Over 950 service providers participated in capacity development in multisectoral responses to gender-based violence, bringing the total to 2,400 trained individuals from 2022 to 2024, implementing case management and a survivor-centred approach

Access to adolescent-friendly health services expanded to 82 establishments with 11 new differentiated spaces implemented in districts with a high prevalence of adolescent pregnancy

Eight initiatives for the transformation of gender social norms were implemented in priority communities using art, culture and sports as tools for change, including artistic festivals, sports events promoting positive masculinities and creation of an Artists’ Network

Three permanent sectoral dialogue spaces were consolidated to follow up on commitments from the Montevideo Consensus and the Nairobi Summit: civil society organizations articulation, academic dialogue with universities and United Nations System agencies coordination
