Conflict, political upheaval, drought and the COVID-19 pandemic have created a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan that threatens many of the development gains of recent decades. Afghan women and girls are paying the heaviest price. Many mothers are dying from preventable childbirth and pregnancy complications, and many women are experiencing gender-based violence. The goal of UNFPA’s humanitarian work in Afghanistan is to provide life-saving reproductive health services and to prevent, mitigate and respond to gender-based violence.
