Art, expression and safe spaces

At a UNFPA supported youth centre in Calavi, near Cotonou, Benin, young people saw their creativity come to life on the walls of their youth center.

Led by artist Larenson Djihouessi (Mr Stone), a group of painters transformed the centre using artwork designed by the youth who regularly gather there. What started as sketches and ideas became powerful graffiti murals — one portraying a nurse guiding a counseling session, the other capturing teenagers playing table football.

Located on hospital grounds, this youth centre is more than a recreational hub. It’s a safe space where young people can access counseling and support on gender and sexual health, among other essential services.

Join UNFPA is advocating for youth voices because when young people help shape their spaces, they help shape their futures.
