On her recent visit to a refugee shelter in Moldova, UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem met women who fled the war in Ukraine with just what they could carry.

Many of them fear for their future as they do not know where to go or what to do.

Their rights, needs and safety must be prioritized.

Elena and her teenage daughter Tatiana fled the war in Odessa, Ukraine to seek shelter in Chișinău, Moldova. To this day, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians have crossed borders into neighboring countries. Like Elena and Tatiana, most of them are women and children who left their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons behind. Learn more
