Sudan remains one of the world’s most severe and complex humanitarian crises, with 30.4 million people in need of assistance amid widespread displacement, food insecurity, and surging gender-based violence. Over 10.5 million people are internally displaced, including more than 2.5 million women and girls of reproductive age. The collapse of health systems, especially in conflict-affected areas like Darfur, has severely limited access to maternal care and protection services. Rising conflict-related sexual violence, intensified by the spread of drone warfare and mass displacement, continues to endanger women and girls, particularly in informal settlements where community safety mechanisms have collapsed.

In response, UNFPA is delivering critical sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services across all 18 states of Sudan. Since January 2025, over 65,000 individuals have received SRH services through UNFPA-supported static and mobile clinics. Emergency obstetric care has been expanded, with nearly 8,000 births supported, including cesarean sections. UNFPA also reached more than 68,000 people with GBV interventions in May alone, supported 63 women and girls’ safe spaces, and delivered nearly 20,000 dignity kits. Health personnel training, infrastructure upgrades, and the deployment of mobile outreach teams have ensured continuity of care despite deteriorating conditions.

However, these lifesaving efforts are under severe threat due to critical underfunding. UNFPA’s 2025 appeal for $145.7 million has only received 27 per cent of required funding, leaving a $105.9 million shortfall. This gap has already led to the withdrawal of support from over half of the health facilities that previously received assistance, undermining service delivery in some of the hardest-hit areas. Without urgent financial support, the continuity of essential care for millions of women and girls is at risk.
