2013 Annual Report of FGM Joint Programme: Accelerating Change

Report of Phase I

The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme "Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting [FGM/C): Accelerating Change” was developed in 2007 to protect girls and women by accelerating abandonment of FGM/C and providing care for its consequences. The Programme's novel, culturally sensitive, human rights-based approach strategically leverages social dynamics in favor of abandonment. It was implemented in 15 African countries from 2008 to 2013.

Throughout the five years of Phase I, the Programme maintained a consistent focus on changing the value attributed to girls and women affected by FGM/C. Enabling their potential, empowering their aspirations and ensuring their protection has been at the core of the programme. A global framework adapted and applied to local realities has resulted in tailored, evidence-based national strategies that are enhancing environments, so that individuals and families adhere to abandonment more effectively.
