Active in Mauritania since 1979, UNFPA works to increase the quality of and access to reproductive health services, and to integrate population issues into national strategies. Programmes support the government in promoting gender equality, developing national strategies on youth and reproductive health, and reducing maternal mortality. UNFPA assistance also helps increase capacities to address obstetric fistula, to prevent HIV and to produce quality demographic data. In addition, UNFPA is actively contributing to the integration of sexual and reproductive health care in responses to humanitarian crises.
