World Menopause Day

A natural life transition, menopause is one of the most overlooked areas of women’s health.

Stigma and misconceptions remain long-standing barriers to care – including misguided beliefs that women should “tough it out” or seek treatment for only the most severe symptoms.

Typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55, menopause may manifest as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, weight gain, brain fog, anxiety or other symptoms; over time, hormonal changes can increase the risk of more serious health complications. Perimenopause, the transition period between a woman’s reproductive years and menopause, can begin much earlier, with symptoms that often go unrecognized.

The varying physical, social, sexual and psychological manifestations of all stages of menopause may be impacted by factors such as race, ethnicity and social class.

As we mark World Menopause Day this year, we call for health, equality and justice for women before, during and after menopause.

Menopause care requires action at all levels, from education to health systems. Young people should learn about menopause as part of their comprehensive sexuality education. Healthcare providers should receive adequate training to ensure quality, evidence-based care. National policies must recognize menopause as a public health and rights issue, ensuring access to essential medicines, counselling and information within primary healthcare.

Upholding the rights and dignity of those experiencing menopause leads to broader social gains, including greater equality and productivity. Breaking stigmas reduces the marginalization that older women often face, improves health outcomes and is crucial for gender equality.
