In conflict zones across the world, war is being waged on medical facilities and front-line healthcare workers – with impunity.

Deliberate attacks on healthcare are a violation of international humanitarian law, and perpetrators must be held accountable. To mark World Humanitarian Day, UNFPA calls on global leaders to prioritize the protection of health facilities, personnel and the people they serve. Leaders must take concrete steps to stop attacks on healthcare, end impunity for perpetrators and impose consequences for breaches of international law.

Battlefields are already high-risk environments for women and girls, with sexual violence being used as a weapon of war. Without functioning health facilities, survivors of rape and abuse cannot access even the most basic care, such as emergency contraception, post-rape treatment and psychological support. For pregnant women without a safe maternity ward to turn to, childbirth can quickly turn life threatening.

Last year was the deadliest year on record for aid workers, and 2025 could end up being even worse. Governments must ensure that each alleged violation of international humanitarian law is investigated thoroughly and step up to protect those who risk their lives to serve others.
