Myanmar faces overlapping humanitarian needs caused by armed conflict, violence and natural disasters. Health system weaknesses have kept maternal mortality high, with a majority of deliveries taking place at home, unassisted by skilled birth attendance. UNFPA began its assistance in 1973, working to strengthen reproductive and sexual health services, HIV/AIDS prevention and women’s rights. UNFPA also works to boost the country’s capacity to produce high-quality demographic data and to conduct research and analysis on gender equality issues.
