This is an independent evaluation of the Maternal Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) contribution to UNFPA support to maternal health from 2008 until 2011. The mid-term evaluation assesses the potential of the MHTF to act in a catalytic manner and focuses on technical areas such as midwifery, family planning and emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC). The mid-term evaluation also covers the internal coordination and management processes of the MHTF and aspects of leveraging and visibility.

The mid-term evaluation of the Maternal Health Thematic Fund was carried out concomitantly with the thematic evaluation of UNFPA support to maternal health (2000-2011).

The purpose of the mid-term evaluation is to assess the design, coordination, and added value of the Maternal Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) as a targeted effort to improve maternal health and to provide a set of recommendations to inform project management and policy decision making for UNFPA future support to maternal health.
