Despite significant natural resources and skilled human capital, Iraq’s development has been marred by a history of war, international sanctions and internal strife. Active in Iraq since 2004, UNFPA focuses on improving life for women and youth by providing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health-care information and services, supporting initiatives to empower women, encouraging youth leadership and working to incorporate youth issues into national development strategies, in addition to providing support during humanitarian emergencies.
